Nicely figured walnut... a nice surprise!
In my old wooden cabin up in the hills of south east London I make banjos, canjos, cigarbox guitars and other things that go twang. Every instrument is fully hand made in the traditional way with a minimal use of power tools and usually using reclaimed timber (that way i can use exotic hard woods and sleep well at night). mountain banjo #2
Here are a few more pics of Mountain banjo #2. Unfortunately i never got around to videoing this one before I sold it so you will just have to believe me when I say its sounds super sweet - In fact it sounds better than my own personal one.
Ive started making two more of these from (reclaimed) mahogany but have so far run out of timber. I will resume as and when I find another Edwardian wardrobe to demolish. This one (and its sister) were made from and old Circa 1920 piano.

A big box of gourds
Today I opened a big box full of big gourds... exciting stuff. April will see the start of a gourd banjo building session. Let me know if you want to order one. Most of these gourds are approximately 12" diameter.

Mountain banjo #2
Just completed Appalachian mountain banjo #2. Pretty much the same as #1 but this time with a wooden sound chamber (sound better) and with some naive mountain style carving around the mid section.
This is for sale for £350
I love these things... the brutalist architecture of the banjo world - solid, tough and primitive... and they sound great.
The wood is from an old (C1920s) piano - Poplar with walnut veneer. The whole thing was made using the most basic of tools in order to keep it looking close to those made by the mountain guys of the past... Im not keen on these banjos looking too slick.
